Generator Performance Incentives
Generator Performance Incentives
Generator Performance Incentive charges are intended to optimise generator capabilities based on the Grid Code standards resulting in reduced power system costs.
In relatively small power systems, such as the all-island SEM, it is central to the efficient and economic operation of the system to ensure that the generators maintain the performance required in
the EirGrid and SONI Grid Codes. Otherwise the safety, security and efficiency of the system could be compromised and/or costs could be imposed on other (compliant) users of the system, for example through higher constraint costs, which is neither efficient nor, arguably, fair. Consequently, Generator Performance Incentive charges have been introduced as part of the harmonised all-island arrangements.
The GPI charges have been derived from a subset of the System Support Services arrangements which were operating in Northern Ireland pre-harmonisation.
The GPI charges form part of the all-island Other System Charges along with Trip charges and Short Notice Declaration charges. The Other System Charges, combined with the all-island Ancillary Services arrangements and Generator Performance Monitoring, will identify non-compliance with standards, will optimise generator capabilities, will help to quantify the performance of the current power system, and help evaluate the performance gap between what is being provided and what needed for the medium and long term development of the power system.
Further details on the arrangements are available in the AS & Other System Charges section of the website.
The Generator Performance Incentive charges have been applied to the following standards and behaviours:
| Trading Period Based GPI Charges | Event Based GPI Charges |
|---|---|
| Minimum Generation | Early Synchronisation |
| Max Starts in 24 hour period | Late Synchronisation |
| Minimum on Time | Loading Rate |
| Reactive Power Leading | De-Loading Rate |
| Reactive Power Lagging | |
| Governor Droop | |
| Primary Operating Reserve | |
| Secondary Operating Reserve | |
| Tertiary Operating Reserve 1 | |
| Tertiary Operating Reserve 2 |
